“Surviving the Silence”

“Surviving the Silence” is as riveting as Greek tragedy when the Gods challenge a proud hero with excruciating punishment.  Cindy Abel’s new documentary tells the story of deeply closeted lesbian Col. Pat Thompson ordered by the U.S. Army to preside over the discharge hearing of none other than the openly lesbian, highly decorated Vietnam veteran, and VA Nurse of the Year—- Col. Margarethe Cammermeyer. Thompson summons the courage to do the deed.  Remarkably, “Surviving the Silence” ratchets the tension a step further with a cathartic scene of reconciliation, sensitively directed by Abel and delivered by these two very deep military women.  A walloping documentary.
