Texas’ largest GLBT archive, created and maintained at the University of North Texas in Denton, was brought into the production of Matthew McConaughey’s Oscar-winning peformance and film, “The Dallas Buyer’s Club”. UNT librarian Morgan Gieringer helped McConaughey recreate the look, the feel, the time period, the parties and events of the Dallas gay scene at the height of the AIDS crisis. This is “archive activism” at its best–rescuing the gay Dallas past so that McConaughey’s portrayal of heroic Ronald Woodruff, who smuggled then- illegal AIDS drugs from Mexico, will be fully realized, enough to perhaps when him an Oscar. This GLBT archive is 400 linear feet of Dallas gay history, including Phil Johnson’s gay archives, William Waybourn’s Dallas Gay Alliance, and the Log Cabin Republicans of Texas Founder’s Collection.
