Remembering “Mattachine & Me”

We are excited to “re-release” our video “Mattachine & Me” at Mattachine’s exclusive, virtual screening of the new documentary “Cured”.

We produced “Mattachine & Me”, featuring the author of “Boy Erased”  Garrard Conley, back in 2018 when the film version of “Boy Erased” was released. Shot at the David and Barbara Pryor Center for Arkansas Oral and Visual History at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, the video is a powerful statement of Garrard’s (and our) belief in the political power of history.  Garrard Conley eloquently delivers this stirring witness in Mattachine & Me.  In the video, Garrard remembers how he and Mattachine donated his conversion therapy Love in Action  “workbook” to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History……and why that matters today.  We can never forget our tour of the Smithsonian vault where we saw an electro-shock machine, lobotomy surgical instruments, and a straight-jacket—- gear of psychiatric “cures” in a dark time.

“Mattachine & Me” was directed by Patrick Sammon, who also was a co-Director for the documentary “Cured”.  In “Cured”, Sammon and co-Director Bennett Singer tell the story of how LGBT activists fought for, and won, a brighter future.
